Isabella by Della Vaz in Toronto
Isabella
This portrait is of baby Isabella, the first child of our new generation. When my cousin Jasmine told me she was pregnant, I felt a kind of joy that settled deep - the kind that comes from watching the people you grew up with step into something bigger than all of us. Seeing Isabella now, already a year and a half old, has become a reminder of how our family keeps growing forward.
The colours in this piece hold that feeling. The soft pinks and warm tones cradle her face in innocence, while the brighter strokes around her hint at the life and energy she’s brought into our world. Each mark is a testament to the love she arrived into and the future she represents.
In painting her, I wanted to honour not just a baby, but the beginning of a new branch of our family - a small life carrying all the hope of what comes next.

Toronto, CanadaI am an artist-educator, Ontario Certified Teacher, and professional visual artist based in Oakville, Ontario. My practice centers on large-scale figurative oil painting on custom-toned grounds, exploring themes of portraiture, family bonds, identity, and memory. In 2026, I was honored with the Mississauga Arts Award (MARTY) for Emerging Visual Artist in Traditional Arts, and my work has been recognized internationally through the Global Undergraduate Awards.
What Inspires Me & My Process
My work is deeply rooted in human connection, relational history, and the emotional resonance of shared spaces. I build custom grey grounds for my canvases, layering oil paint to capture candid, unposed portraiture that highlights subtle body language, vulnerability, and intergenerational ties. I am inspired by the quiet strength found in everyday mentorship, family dynamics, and the personal stories that connect us all.
