Head and Shoulders by Della Vaz in Toronto
Head and Shoulders
This painting gathers three generations through colour and gesture. David leans into me with the familiar weight of childhood trust, our bodies held in warm reds and soft pinks that echo the closeness we shared. Behind us, my grandfather Jossie’s arm enters the frame, painted in muted, weathered tones that honour the arthritis that shaped his hands but never dimmed his strength. His hand clasps my mother’s as they dance, their connection glowing through the subtle blues and golds that move across the canvas. These colours carry our lineage: the tenderness of siblings, the resilience of a father who kept dancing, and the quiet love that built a family large enough to hold all of us. In these layered hues and intertwined hands, I trace the inheritance of care that continues to shape who we are.

Meet the Artist
Toronto, CanadaI am an artist-educator, Ontario Certified Teacher, and professional visual artist based in Oakville, Ontario. My practice centers on large-scale figurative oil painting on custom-toned grounds, exploring themes of portraiture, family bonds, identity, and memory. In 2026, I was honored with the Mississauga Arts Award (MARTY) for Emerging Visual Artist in Traditional Arts, and my work has been recognized internationally through the Global Undergraduate Awards.
What Inspires Me & My Process
My work is deeply rooted in human connection, relational history, and the emotional resonance of shared spaces. I build custom grey grounds for my canvases, layering oil paint to capture candid, unposed portraiture that highlights subtle body language, vulnerability, and intergenerational ties. I am inspired by the quiet strength found in everyday mentorship, family dynamics, and the personal stories that connect us all.
