David and Della by Della Vaz in Toronto
David and Della
This work serves as the anchor of my BFA thesis, a visual cartography of the immigrant journey and the relentless pursuit of a place to call home. Spanning 48 inches, the canvas becomes a living timeline where my brother, David, and I exist in multiple dimensions at once - from the soft, grayscale memories of our childhood to the vivid, saturated reality of our present.
In a world often shaped by fear and the shadows of systemic violence, this painting is an act of reclamation. The interplay of light and shadow is not just a technical choice but a representation of the uncertainty that haunts the search for security in a hostile environment. Amidst this tension, David stands as a monument of resilience. To me, he is the embodiment of mentorship and a steady source of strength. He is a reminder that identity is not just something we are born with, but something we build through one another.
Through the rich, iterative layers of oil paint, I have embraced the inherent "messiness" of both the creative process and the immigrant experience. The square format offers a sense of balance, yet within its borders lies a fluid narrative of vulnerability, growth, and the quiet courage it takes to remain "put together" while navigating uncharted paths.
David and Della is more than a personal testimony; it is an invitation. It asks the viewer to stand within our story and reflect on their own struggles, their own sanctuaries, and the enduring power of the people who walk beside us toward safety.

Meet the Artist
Toronto, CanadaI am an artist-educator, Ontario Certified Teacher, and professional visual artist based in Oakville, Ontario. My practice centers on large-scale figurative oil painting on custom-toned grounds, exploring themes of portraiture, family bonds, identity, and memory. In 2026, I was honored with the Mississauga Arts Award (MARTY) for Emerging Visual Artist in Traditional Arts, and my work has been recognized internationally through the Global Undergraduate Awards.
What Inspires Me & My Process
My work is deeply rooted in human connection, relational history, and the emotional resonance of shared spaces. I build custom grey grounds for my canvases, layering oil paint to capture candid, unposed portraiture that highlights subtle body language, vulnerability, and intergenerational ties. I am inspired by the quiet strength found in everyday mentorship, family dynamics, and the personal stories that connect us all.
