Following in the footsteps of Glasgow’s glittering mural art scene, Edinburgh is building a beautiful community of art appreciation. Largely thanks to Edinburgh’s ‘The Mural Project’ in 2013 street art in Edinburgh has been popping up at an increasing rate. Launched by the visual arts organisation LeithLate, the first mural of the project became the first Edinburgh mural painted in two decades. Street art in Edinburgh hasn’t stopped there!
Interestingly, Edinburgh’s most popular mural was commissioned by Paramount Pictures for Elton John’s biopic ‘Rocket Man’. The mural features an interactive pair of red-feathered wings. Street art and social media in Edinburgh go hand in hand. “There are 3,407 posts relating to Edinburgh Street art on Instagram, proving more popular than Newcastle, Leeds and York.” Looking for a little more history? A local treasure prior to ‘The Mural Project’ can be found near the Leith Library. Painted by Tim Chalk and Paul Grime the mural references the colourful history of Leith.
