As I experimented more with UV paint, I started thinking about other natural, organic forms that emit their own light. Naturally, my mind went to active volcanoes, and I knew I had to try recreating lava. It was exhilarating to guide the flow of lava around the stagnant black rock and sand, creating rivers of flowing lava, in contrast to the oceanic bodies of water I generally made. My favorite thing about this piece (which isn’t really done justice in the photographs, though, the slider below helps) is how stunning it can be to watch it really come to life after turning off the normal light and flipping on a blacklight. Even when people barely notice it otherwise, it really screams for attention in UV light.

New York, United StatesI grew up around the arts (mother is a sculptor, father a writer), I went to school at The Art Institute of California - San Francisco, where I studied a BS in Media Arts & Animation. I was hired out of college at Lucasfilm, where I worked for 7 years as a Designer and Art Director on the Star Wars brand, including various animated series, and some of the more recent films. I have always done fine art in my spare time and have more recently gotten into resin as a particularly interesting medium that straddles 2D and 3D.
