"SIKAT SUBAR" - A Documentary Exploring Timor-Leste's Cultural Heritage by Creative Visuals in Lisbon

"SIKAT SUBAR" is my debut feature-length documentary (1h:34m), produced and directed between 2018 and 2019. The film delves into the intricate cultural, social, and economic dimensions of cockfighting in Timor-Leste, a tradition deeply rooted in the country’s heritage for thousands of years. This project involved months of immersive fieldwork in Timor-Leste, capturing the essence of its landscapes and rich cultural identity. As the creator, producer, director, and cinematographer, I led every aspect of this film’s production. My responsibilities included: Conceptual development of the documentary’s narrative and visual approach. Filming and directing, utilizing cutting-edge drone technology for stunning aerial shots, high-speed cameras for dynamic sequences, and professional audio techniques for clear soundscapes. Collaborating on post-production with the renowned Portuguese film studio FilmesDaMente, ensuring a polished final product. Accolades and Recognition "SIKAT SUBAR" has been selected for 36 international film festivals across 24 countries and 4 continents. The documentary has earned 13 awards and honorable mentions, an exceptional achievement given the competitive nature of international festivals. Cultural Context Cockfighting, known as futu manu in Tetum, holds a significant place in Timor-Leste’s history, with archaeological evidence suggesting origins over 3,000 years ago. Today, it remains a prevalent activity, intertwining with rituals, ceremonies, and livelihoods. This project not only explores the cultural importance of cockfighting but also navigates its controversial aspects, presenting a nuanced narrative that resonates with global audiences.
