The Tucker School. by SOEMS in Boston

Creating the mural at Tucker School was an extraordinary and heartwarming experience, enriched by the students' imaginative ideas about friendship, unity, and community. Collaborating closely with their dedicated art teacher, Mrs. Gillooly, we engaged students through interactive sessions, capturing their excitement and genuine enthusiasm. The creative process, rooted deeply in the students' visions and values, resulted in a vibrant mural that authentically reflects their collective spirit. At the heart of the mural is a galaxy-filled peace sign, designed to draw the viewer inward—symbolizing a universe of possibility, understanding, and connection. Surrounding this focal point, the imagery was selected in collaboration with the students: the basketball highlights the importance of teamwork and energy in their school culture; the hummingbird represents resilience and joy; the butterfly, transformation and growth; and the soccer ball with paw prints reflects both playfulness and a love for animals (specifically the Tucker Tigers). The flowers bloom in a variety of colors and forms. They represent diversity and the beauty of growth—mirroring the students themselves and their journey through learning and life. The pink heart shaped wreath and bow honor the life and spirit of Isabella “Bella” Pierre-Louis, a Tucker fifth grader, who passed away this year; this was an essential design aspect for Tucker students.These elements, expressed through vivid spray paint, celebrate the individuality and unity of Tucker School’s students, creating a meaningful visual landmark that resonates with both parents and the broader community. As my first solo large-scale mural, this project has been a deeply meaningful milestone. I’m incredibly honored and humbled to have been entrusted with bringing this vision to life. This project was made possible by Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Creative Projects grant, a Milton Local Cultural Council grant, and a New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) Public Art for Spatial Justice Grant. In the fall 2025, utilizing the mural as a catalyst and inspiration, Tucker parent volunteers will curate and convene subsequent community conversations with partners to foster dialogue about Milton's evolving identity as a town and the role the arts play in cultural vitality and health.
