Portrait of a man in blue by Sarah Cripps in Leighton Buzzard
Portrait of a man in blue
There is strong contrast between light and shadow here, reflected in the clothes as well as the face. The colour palette is slightly exaggerated and the pale background calms the mood. The young man seems to be asking us to understand and sympathise with him.
Meet the Artist
Leighton Buzzard, United KingdomThank you for looking at my page! I love to paint people, animals and nature.
With a Master’s degree in Victorian Studies, I’ve always been fascinated by the art of the turn of the 20th century, especially Van Gogh, Monet, Cezanne, Picasso and Hopper.
For part of my career I was lucky enough to be in an international organisation, which meant travelling all over the world. That gave me the chance to experience different nature, culture, art, light, colour and form, as well as turning me into a travel junkie... 52 countries visited so far and counting!
As you’d expect with this background, my themes relate to nature, travel, people and animals. I focus on oil painting because I love the vibrancy and viscosity of the medium. I aim to use joyful colour palettes and I’m interested in the indication of form in the mind’s eye. With portraits especially I like to have a sense of narrative, capturing a moment of emotion or thought.
