Portrait of a boy by Sarah Cripps in Leighton Buzzard
Portrait of a boy
This portrait has a background painted with rags in bright colours to give a feeling of run down streets. The face has a strong tone contrast and colour palette with plenty of glazing while the shirt is loosely and thinly painted. The composition places the face in the centre and the subject addresses the viewer directly with a challenging look. Reference photo by kind courtesy of Samuel Aboh.
Meet the Artist
Leighton Buzzard, United KingdomThank you for looking at my page! I love to paint people, animals and nature.
With a Master’s degree in Victorian Studies, I’ve always been fascinated by the art of the turn of the 20th century, especially Van Gogh, Monet, Cezanne, Picasso and Hopper.
For part of my career I was lucky enough to be in an international organisation, which meant travelling all over the world. That gave me the chance to experience different nature, culture, art, light, colour and form, as well as turning me into a travel junkie... 52 countries visited so far and counting!
As you’d expect with this background, my themes relate to nature, travel, people and animals. I focus on oil painting because I love the vibrancy and viscosity of the medium. I aim to use joyful colour palettes and I’m interested in the indication of form in the mind’s eye. With portraits especially I like to have a sense of narrative, capturing a moment of emotion or thought.
