Issabella and Montana by Stewart Shuker in Brisbane
Issabella and Montana
I purchased A class antique bricks from a demo site in Melbourne and transported them to Brisbane, hired a brick layer to lay them in front of an existing wall, then I rendered and painted 'Montana' on the brick wall. We then bagged the other 70's tan bricks through the entire pub so that the only exposed brick was these antique bricks in the mural. Even the tradies on the job were like, 'it's great you managed to save these old bricks'. We wanted to give the illusion that his new pub had been here forever. The art was going to be on a back wall, but the publican changed the location at the last minute to make it the feature wall. It has come to stand for the pub. It is iconic in the area and all the performers play in front of the wall. This is one of three murals in brick which I have created, all for the same publican in the Montague Hotel West End, Fortitude Valley [now closed], and the Queens Arms in Roma.
Meet the Artist
Brisbane, AustraliaI am a Brisbane based artist. With a background in science and a career as a commercial artist, my focus lies in crafting large-scale murals and oversized canvases. On one level I am very happy to create attractive or provocative art for private spaces. On another level I bring forth a wealth of experience creating art for commercial spaces, having translated my skills into diverse projects from retail spaces to pubs and street art, from creating impactful logos to designing graphics for websites. In one space, the Queens Arms Hotel in Roma Queensland, I filled the pub with art from large scale brick, render and paint down to stencils and paint pens on the walls recreating old ads the pub ran 100 years ago. I specialise in creating bespoke art solutions for your space. Dive into the world of large mural art and expansive canvases, meticulously curated to elevate your surroundings.
