Broken Not Beaten by Vasundhara Deshmukh in Mumbai

“Broken Not Beaten” is one of the most emotionally charged and personal paintings I’ve created, a tribute to resilience, identity, and the inner fire that keeps us going. Inspired by the legacy of Kobe Bryant, this isn’t just a portrait; it’s a visual reclaiming of strength, created at a turning point in my life. I painted this piece in London, shortly after graduating with a Master’s in Project Management. It was during that in-between space, the quiet but intense phase of deciding to pursue life as a full-time artist. This painting became my way of working through all the uncertainty, fear, and pressure that comes with a bold decision like that. It helped me reconnect with my purpose and reminded me that it’s okay to be rebuilding, as long as I’m doing it on my own terms. The painting was made using acrylics on canvas, rough, layered brushstrokes, intentional textures, and heavy contrast to reflect the emotional weight. The cracks and shadows on Kobe’s face represent not weakness, but survival. The title “Broken Not Beaten” captures that perfectly: even when life breaks you open, you can come back stronger and more you than ever.
