So I actually wanted to play saxophone in the band, but since my older sister played trombone and money was tight, my mother instructed me to "play whatever horn that is in there you sister got". I made the best of the decision that was made for me, and eventually started to really like the trombone. I had to fall in love with holding down the background, as opposed to being the lyrics that everyone sings along with. I had to realize that as wonderful as those lyrics were, and I could have sung them with the saxophone, that the backbone of the song is indeed the background music and without it, the song just isn't the same. This piece was done in acrylics, and is accompanied by two other paintings depicting a trombone player and a trumpet player. Some of my closest friends played these instruments-and they were amazing!

Houston, United StatesI am an acrylic artist, born in the Mississippi Delta, but who now lives in Houston, TX. My father, a freelance photographer among other things, taught me to draw a camera from a circle, two squares and a rectangle. I thought it was the most amazing thing. At the age of five, I was able to draw a camera like a professional! I continued to draw and paint throughout childhood, majored in Fine Arts in college (then switched my major) and continued to teach art classes at the small school where I work. I started attempting a professional path in art during Covid and have been working ever since. My work reflects my upbringing, heritage, and culture. Paintings live in my head, then on canvas, and then I never think about them again. I get to manifest a vision long kept, then touch it outside of my mind. Art is something my father gave me and instructed me on how to give it to the world.
