Total years of experience:

6 Years

I am a Western Australian based artist. I work in my spare time I work as a community artist and secondary school art, design and technology teacher who has lived and worked in the City of Rockingham since 2007. Recently I was commissioned to design and install several small murals on assets for the City of Vincent on William Street. My most recent mural installation was on a large wall space in an apartment building car park in Fremantle. Over the past several years I’ve been contracted to lead community arts workshops for the City of Rockingham, teaching a range of art forms to local youth and adult residents: mural painting, seascape painting, cardboard sculpture, zentangle drawings, lino printing and digital art. I would like to take the opportunity to share with you the reason why I feel I would be able to contribute my experience and skills within the Mural painting spectrum. I have gained much experience over the years in the Arts sector. I started off as a Set Designer designing and building stage sets for TV and Theatre. This included scaling up the artwork to paint back drops etc… In those days I used a plumb line and scaffolding to do this. Nowadays I utilise digital art programs like Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator to simulate the same, so I can enlarge the artwork to fit. Although I haven’t completed any murals with that height yet. I am aware of the protocols necessary that I would have to consider and implement before taking on a job like the two water tanks. Due to the vast nature of the knowledge and skills I have acquired over the years I am able to replicate in any style/genre necessary and utilise whatever art mediums are needed. Due to the nature of my job working as a fulltime teacher I am available after school and on weekends during school term and in school holidays. Below is a design I created for a large wall installation which has now been installed. I have worked for The City of Vincent please see below artwork. I would really like to be given the opportunity to mural paint whether this is working on my own or collaboratively. The William Street Mural installation design ideas plus finished mural for the City of Vincent April 2021. Mural painted to look like a patchwork quilt. A small budget was allocated of $1000 which including materials to install both assets on the Corner of Monger Street and William Street. I was able to involve the community to help paint the murals. I used colour by numbers which allowed me to concentrate on the detail. I started painting when I was a child and I’ve been most passionate about this art form ever since. I’m currently a full-time senior teacher of art and design (ceramics, drawing, printing and media) and technology and enterprise at Atwell Secondary College. The other subjects I teach are wood technology, metal technology including engineering, CAD, systems, photography, digital media, ICT, home economics and textiles. I’ve also previously been appointed as Atwell Secondary College’s occupational health and safety officer. I have an affinity for and understanding of our local youths, as well as an understanding and passion for the nature and culture of our local area and its people. I’m particularly passionate about how art is expressed in our community, how it tells the stories of our youths and the place they live. As a long-time and keen observer, admirer and creator of art for the public, I’ve developed innumerable practical and artistic skills over the years, which I’m super-keen to apply to an all-new project – particularly in my local community, Rockingham. Backed by my strong arts education, since leaving university my career has continuously revolved around the design, development and creation of art in numerous forms. My artworks have been produced for everything from personal to industry, educational and community projects. In term of creating large-scale art, I studied theatre design for five years at England’s Hartlepool College of Art and Design and designed and built stage sets, backdrops and props for various professional and amateur theatre productions in northern England. Working in my own business Also in the UK, I co-ran a business renovating dilapidated single and double-storey Victorian-era properties, including a five-storey house. I also helped run a screen printing and embroidery business. Working with aged care community In 2019, I was commissioned to paint two murals for Port Kennedy’s ‘Bethanie Waters Aged Care Home,’ Warnbro: an interactive mural of an open window into a timeless memory-lane garden for an internal space for residents with dementia. Plus, another mural on a double thoroughfare door inside the home. It was a real blessing to meet some of the residents whilst working on the murals. I made some new friends there. Working with Youths In terms of youth centre art commissions, in 2005 I designed and created a mural for a youth centre in Durham (UK) that represented the local community, plus a mosaic for the Brandon Carrside Youth Centre’s Garden in Co Durham (UK). I was hired as a Arts Facilitator and I was paid by the hour to run this with the youths of the Youth Centre. I’ve also recently been commissioned to paint portraits of people and animals, I designed several album covers, and I’ve been invited to create textile designs for a children’s clothing label in the UK.
