Rosa Parks, Nina Simone & Ruby Bridges by ENNICOLOR in Berlin

Rosa Parks, Nina Simone & Ruby Bridges

This mural is about standing up for racial equality and women’s empowerment. I chose to paint three iconic leaders to commemorate their efforts and activism. Rosa Parks (1913–2005) is known for courageously refusing to give up her seat on a bus to a white person during a time when segregation was legal. Her vital role in this movement helped bring attention to the mistreatment of colored persons and launched nationwide efforts to end racial segregation of public facilities. Nina Simone (1933–2003) was a singer, songwriter, musician, arranger, and civil rights activist. At age 17, she enrolled in the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. She used her musical talents to challenge racial discrimination. Ruby Bridges (1954–) was the first African American child to integrate an all-white public elementary school in the South. Her simple act of going to an all-white school marked the beginning of integration for U.S. public schools. These women fought against racism their whole lives. We all should follow their example and actively combat racism and xenophobia.
