One Love - Bob Marley Portrait by Jasmin Issaka in Manchester
One Love - Bob Marley Portrait
Beyond my love for art, my second greatest passion is music. So when a client asked me to create a portrait of Bob Marley, the only response that came to mind was: "Don't worry about a thing!"
I thoroughly enjoyed bringing this piece to life, but I also set myself a creative challenge—limiting my palette to just three colors: red, yellow, and green. This was a deliberate nod to Bob Marley's Jamaican roots and felt especially meaningful as the recipient of this commission also had Jamaican heritage. The choice wasn’t just symbolic; it added a powerful, striking simplicity to the composition.
The client—and their friend—absolutely loved the final piece, and now it sits proudly above their DJ decks in their studio, a fitting home for a tribute to a musical legend. What I loved most about this project was the beauty of restriction—limiting the color palette allowed the expressive details of the eyes to take center stage, drawing the viewer into the soul of the piece.
One of my favorite creative decisions was integrating abstract patterns into Bob Marley’s face through the drifting smoke from his cigarette. Usually, my patterns remain in the background or subtly interact with the subject. But in this case, they became an essential framing element, adding movement, rhythm, and flow—just like Marley’s music itself. The freehand fluidity of the patterns not only adds visual interest but also enhances the organic, effortless energy of the portrait.
I'm truly grateful to have had the opportunity to create this meaningful, personal gift, and I’m always excited to take on projects that celebrate both art and music in a unique and vibrant way!
