First Mother, created in 2022 Acrylic and Hand Sewn Obsidian on Cotton Curtain 180cm x 160cm £4000 The importance of sacred connection with Ancestors was impressed upon my childhood through my Antiguan Family Tree that hangs proudly over my childhood piano. Seeing my Mother’s, Mother’s, Mother’s, Mother’s names displayed so clearly and boldly was a powerful reminder that our foremothers used strength they shouldn’t have needed to use to keep the African Diaspora alive. To keep our names alive and spoken! This piece acts as a tribute to those before us and when all is said and done, the First Mother and Ancestor of us all, the Kemetic Sky Goddess Nut (Nuit). I invite you to speak the name of a treasured Ancestor when gazing into this piece.
