City Theatre Mural by Marlana in Pittsburgh

This mural was created as a tribute to the City Theatre Company community. For inspiration, we used descriptions from their 2022 play “The Rivers Don’t Know” and the cast’s feedback about what Pittsburgh means to them. They also wanted to represent all of the demographics and cultures in their theater community, so I included a range of ages and occupations represented in the characters. I created a design based on this feedback and included their words along with playbill-style graphics, combined with City Theatre's branding and typography. After checking the building specs with their architect, I painted my designs on their building and created it so that it could be lit easily with spotlights on opening nights. This alternative allowed them to have more options with the mural during different times of the day since they wanted something bright, but didn’t have the ability to add permanent lights to this area.
