I am an artist and retired art teacher. Although I work on my own commissions I focus quite a lot of my time promoting and showcasing children`s and young people`s art. On a regular basis I write an art column in our local newspaper, the Telegraph and Argus, which gives children an opportunity to send me their artwork to feature in these articles. I teach art one to one, in my home studio, for students wishing to move further than the lessons in school can offer. At present I have seven students age 6yrs to 15yrs. Two of these students I teach via a video link to Chile which is a challenge but fun.
I take on school art projects and also staff art skills training meetings in Primary Schools.
My own work centres around everything from landscapes, portraits, animal portraits, semi-abstracts, etc Joe Lycett recently bought a large portrait of himself dressed as Gainsborough`s Blue Boy. I have completed one of Joe in his silver BAFTA award outfit which is waiting for his approval.
I exhibit regularly in galleries around the country and sold around the world in previous years. At present those being in Halifax and Trapezium Gallery Bradford, West Yorkshire. In 2024 I had a successful solo exhibition at the Trapezium Gallery.
In 2022 it was a great honour to have a painting accepted into the Royal Academy of Arts in London. I was also chosen to take part in a documentary for BBC2 following my journey from being shortlisted to being accepted The programme is still available to watch on Iplayer titled `Joe Lycett Summer Exhibitionist `.I have entered work annually as well as submitting some of my student`s artwork into the Young Artists Summer Exhibition at the RA. Two years ago one of my student`s work was accepted out of over 3,000 entries. She was only 10yrs old at the time.
I am now putting together project ideas working towards exhibitions for 2025 City of Culture, but still enjoying my own painting along the way
