About
‘The future has an ancient heart.’ - Carlo Levi (1902-1975) I'm a Queer, New York-based artist working in acrylic on canvas and other textiles, as well as natural/organic materials including leather, bones, feathers, and teeth. Informed by shamanic and animist belief systems, the primary goal of my work is to explore the ancient, archetypal currents and complexes that influence all humans everywhere, emerging through spiritual practice, folklore, ritual, and dreams. I aim to draw parallels between geographically disparate cultures, seeking points of intersection and honoring the fundamental, psychic trueness of figures and stories often discarded as ‘myths’ under Western and Judeo-Christian influence. Through use of bold, saturated color, pattern repetition, and symbol, I hope to evoke a feeling of recognition - of encountering something very old, yet not remote; a sense of talismanic protection, if not exactly safety; of remembering the message, even if the source has been forgotten.

My process for canvas paintings, garments, and body painting involves an in-depth preliminary discussion with the client about who they are, their cultural background, spiritual practice, family history, dreams, and colors that are meaningful to them. From there, I do additional research and a lot of thinking, and then begin sketching. When an image is clear in my mind, I commit the sketch to canvas (or leather, fabric, skin, etc).

I respectfully decline commissions involving existing characters (Disney,   Marvel,   anime,   etc),   elements running counter to my general aesthetic (neon colors,   splatter/drip painting,   etc) and projects involving inappropriate/offensive cultural appropriation or satire.
