Suminagashi Marbling
$ 59
This is a form of mono-printing where no two prints will be exactly the same.
Suminagashi (sue-me-NAH-gah-she) comes from the Japanese words “sumi” meaning ink and “nagashi” meaning floating. The ancient form of Japanese marbling dates back over 800 years. This is a form of mono-printing where no two prints will be exactly the same.
Colored inks are floated on a bath of clear water and then gently manipulated into delicate and serendipitous patterns, unlike Western traditions of paper marbling with many more ingredients and standardized patterns. Paper is carefully laid on top of the water to absorb the colors and then lifted.
All materials and tools are provided for the completion of six to twelve prints depending on complexity. After the class, each student will take the dried prints in an envelope for safe-keeping and travel.
Bringing a bag capable of holding a 9”x12” sheet is preferred.
