Kate Mitchell is a British Artist who lives and works in London. As a teenager she received an art scholarship to attend Friend’s School Saffron Walden which allowed her to immerse herself in the study of drawing and painting. During her time here she was taught batik by Ella Berthoud which was seminal in creating her unique style. She later went on to study creative drawing at Central St Martins while studying theology and philosophy at University. These early experiences led to her combining her love of mysticism and place into expressive landscapes.
After a cancer diagnosis which left her having to shield Kate began to work more in earnest on painting as a way to heal.
Working in a range of media including resins, plaster and acrylic Kate’s paintings are highly intuitive images and are often inspired by music or poetry and aim to portray the emotional impact of landscape. Kate says of her work that ‘each image captures the impact of a landscape on the soul and in return how place opens up the mystery of psyche’.
