I used Resene lumbersider paint and brushes and completed the artwork, part-time during the rainy season, over six weeks. The brief was to include something to commemorate a beloved teacher who had passed away and whose classroom was now being turned into a library for the school. I was given free reign to come up with a concept and design of the artwork and I decided to use oversized books as climbing blocks for various favourite book characters, encapsulating the energy and wonder of the young children around me at the school. A great deal of the project required sign writing as each book required an appropriate title and the walls were filled with characters playing, hiding and reading. The intent of the concept was to draw children into the mural by looking, searching and recognizing their favourite characters and creating conversations through the whimsy of the mural. The beloved teacher got made over into a character, sitting atop a book and reading to a couple of other book characters playing around her. This was a very satisfying project as the children and staff of the school continually watched the project evolve and I would often find myself surrounded by a group of children just enjoying watching the process during their break times.
