The Runnymede Underpass Project - 2021
Title: The Runnymede Underpass Project Size: 4710 square feet For: The City of Toronto Where: Toronto, Ontario Medium: Latex & Spray Year: 2021
The concept for the Runnymede Underpass Project is heavily influenced by
the long-standing Indigenous history of the area. It is thoughtfully inspired by
the way in which Indigenous culture relies on dreams, visions, and intergener-
ational connections to past and present spirit guides, which informs the self
and everyday decision-making in the community. Through this lens, the goal
of the design is to bring the viewer into this experience, taking them on a
symbolic journey through the historical shifts and transitions that reflect
the Indigenous legacy in Toronto (Tkaronto).
The incorporation of ancient routes like the Carrying-Place Trail, to modern
bicycle paths, to the immersion of earthy, grounded colours that evoke natural
elements of water, earth, wind, and fire, is a call to the long-held teaching and
influence of Indigenous elders and the Indigenous community more broadly.
This piece is an invitation to learn, understand, and respect Indigenous life
and culture and the magnitude of influence it has had on our understanding
of, and experience with, what we now call Toronto (Tkaronto).
The concept was created in partnership with Kevin Myran from the Toronto Fire Council and in consultation and guidance from members of the Indigenous Community. The project was also produced with the assistance of muralist Stephanie Bellefleur and indigenous youth artist Naz Pope.
