The death that follows by Felicity Robinson in Singapore

The death that follows

This piece is made to illustrate the death and decay that follows pollution. I sketched brief anatomy of a skull with charcoal - this technique of using oil paint over the top of charcoal allows the charcoal to disappear once you paint, leaving no trace of the initial sketch behind. I chose to paint a skull to represent humanities death that is present for the foreseeable future, if humanity doesn't fix the pollution that have been inflicted. I used a square brush to paint the skull. I used a blue undertone for the skull with slight tinges of pink, to capsulate the pollution making the skull look more human and infected, rather than the traditional colours used to paint skulls. I then proceeded to use numerous materials to start my process of the background. First I sewed on a scrap piece of material similar to the texture of burlap. Then I plastered strips of plaster all over areas of the canvas. then I laid down pieces of duct tape and translucent paper over the top of some scrap material. from there I embroidered red stitching in a pattern on top of the translucent paper. I then used oil paint, acrylic emulsion and flour mixed together to make the pant thinker and easier to layer, I built upon this covering areas around the canvas. I chose multiple mediums in this process to represent rubbish and pollution, and the many textures that can be found in trash piles for example.
