ode to the endemic orchid species
Watercolor painting with gouache background.
This painting is an ode to the endemic orchid species of the Philippines—the most threatened group of plants in the Philippines (Buenavista, 2017). The Philippines is the home of one of the largest populations of orchid species in the world (Cootes et al., 2011).
Orchids are one of the most popular flora species in the world mainly due to their unique and diverse beauty. They are known for their ornamental uses; however, they are just “more than a pretty face”. Their more important uses are their ecological services as bioindicators and habitats for microscopic organisms (Panal et al., 2015).
