Jesus Is Stripped Of His Garments by James Callaghan Art in Glasgow
Jesus Is Stripped Of His Garments
I painted this during lockdown as part of a collection of 14 original depictions of The Stations Of The Cross. Each painting is painted in Acrylics on Canvas Board, and measures 50x40cm excluding the frames. And measuring 70x50cm including the frames. I wanted to create these traditional images in my own style as apposed to the more colourful depictions we normally see. Painted in black and white with shades of red throughout, I wanted to take the viewers eye and mind on a closer journey with Christ. To be able to see and feel the pain and torment in which he endured through The Passion. I deliberately left out most background details and kept the people in each painting to a minimum, to focus solely on the weight and burden of the cross, and the pain felt by Christ.
These images are traditional, and respectful, and have been framed in a traditional but modern way to capture the hearts of the people of today's world.
This is a collection of 14 paintings to be sold as a set only.
Hello , I am an artist born in the south-side of Glasgow in Scotland.
I have lived in Glasgow my whole life and draw inspiration for my art through my faith and the city I live in.
Whilst I also paint using Oils, and watercolour, I prefer to work predominantly with acrylics, and like to show a bias towards using monochromatic tones with a subtle splash of colour. This has become a trademark of mine, and has become my preferred style of painting which helps identify my work, making it interesting, bold, and striking to the viewer.
I enjoy using a stylised composition in which I can incorporate bold, vivid tones and like to express shadows. I often mix a surrealism and a modernism style of art.
I am privileged to say that I have had works displayed in Glasgow's 'An Unexpected Gallery', and London's 'Capital Arts Gallery', and currently have work displayed in Glasgow's 'Stag Gallery & picture framers'. I have received great feedback from both the curators and the public, with much of my work being purchased by collectors of art immediately after being hung on the gallery walls.
I recently completed a series of paintings reflecting my vision of a Post Apocalyptic Glasgow, which remain a talking point and have often been referred to as having an almost Gothic atmosphere to them.
My work has been well received over the years, and it has been said that my paintings stop people in their tracks.
I count myself fortunate enough to have sold many commissions over the years, which are now housed in private collections across the globe.
In 2012 after entering an exhibition run by The Archdiocese Of Glasgow for their annual Lentfest art exhibition, run by AGAP, my work was featured in a newspaper article in The Glasgow Herald newspaper. It then went on to be displayed in the exhibition, which was held at Glasgow Universities Chaplaincy, alongside works by Jolomo and Peter Howson. My paintings have been exhibited each year since, in the Lentfest exhibition.
In 2019 I held my first solo art exhibition in a venue in the Gorbals Blessed John Duns Scotus, where images of my paintings were also projected onto a backdrop to accompany a live concert by world renowned classical pianist Alessandra Pompili.
I have also had some of my work selected for display in the Edinburgh Art show for Macmillan cancer, with a global audience to help promote and support the fight against cancer, and to support people and their families diagnosed or affected by cancer.
Inspired by contrasting shadows, monochromatic tones, the human body and a particular fascination of the power, shape, and differences within the appearance and form of peoples hands, I look for ways to incorporate these inspirations into my work.
I am particularly comfortable with portrait work, cityscapes and landmarks, and surrealism.
Whilst always looking for, and happy to accept new challenges, I am happy to discuss commissions with you, after all, the best art in the world is in your imagination. And if you can imagine it, I can paint it.
Please feel free to get in touch to discuss any ideas you may have. I will do my best to meet your budget if possible, and I offer a free no obligation quote service, so if you have an enquiry, I am happy to help.
I take my role as an artist very seriously, and I am proud of my reputation to work with you throughout the whole process to make sure that you are 100% happy with the final outcome.
I am continuously grateful for the opportunity to paint, and create art, and for the continuous love and support of my family, who are my inspiration and support throughout.
