This Mural was inspired by the ecosystem of the nearby cooks river. Historically the most polluted river in Australia, life has slowly been returning thanks to the community efforts by local councils and community groups like the Mudcrabs (who my mum has been volunteering with for 20 years) and the Cooks River Alliance . You’ll find eels, turtles, mudcrabs, pelicans, great egrets, darters and more thriving in the mangroves of this inner city river. It’s been really rewarding getting to paint public art and research and design in relation to place. Especially for a river which I grew up next to and have seen change over the years

Newcastle, AustraliaRuby is a signwriter and mural artist with 8 years of experience. She has developed a unique style which differentiaties her from traditional signpainters, although she uses predominantly traditional techniques with brushes, paint and gold leaf gilding. Her work feels contemporary yet retro, and with her own spin. She takes time and care with each project to create high quality, long lasting and unique work which connects us to humanness, craftsmanship and the handmade in an ever growing digital landscape.
Ruby has a degree in design in visual communication and paints signage, murals and ornament which is in conversation with its location. She also pulls inspiration from historical architectural movements like art nouveau and the arts and crafts movement which celebrate beauty and detail in our every day lives as a rejection of mass production and homogenisation.
