Becoming Air by The Automatist Eye in San Diego

"Becoming Air' captures the restless energy of transformation - that electric moment between confinement and freedom, when the artist's hand moves faster than thought and the paper seems to breathe. Using a fusion of charcoal and watercolor on Bristol board, Garcia harnesses gesture and diffusion to balance chaos with grace. The interplay of darkness a fluid color evokes both emotional turbulence and release, suggesting a being caught between grounding and flight. There comes a point when you've been grounded so long, you start to feel the weight of your own stillness. Becoming Air was born from that feeling - the urge to break free, to rediscover what moves me, to see how the world fits together now that l've stopped fighting it. This piece is a study in movement, both physical and internal. I worked with charcoal, letting one define structure while the other dissolved it — a balance between precision and surrender. The technique comes from what I learned under Jeff Watts, a renowned painter and founder of the Watts Atelier of the Arts, known for his mastery of expressive realism and dynamic figure drawing. It's also inspired by the mentorship of Professor Wayne from San Diego City College, whose passion for visual storytelling helped me see beyond form and into feeling. To me, art is not about perfection; it's about presence - the love and energy we pour into a single moment until it becomes eternal. Becoming Air is my reminder that even when life feels heavy, we are meant to rise.
