A Taste of the Past
It has been a bit more than two years since I left my home country and moved to Portugal. Two years since I last saw my beloved grandmother, the woman who brought me up and taught me everything I know. The memories of our shared moments, especially our picnics under the warm sun, are still vivid in my mind.
This painting is a reflection of my grandmother's love for food, a love deeply rooted in her experiences during the war. Her survival during those times had etched a mark on her heart, transforming food from a necessity into a symbol of comfort and joy.
For me this is a way to return to my childhood memories of spending time with my grandmother. Her kitchen was always filled with the delicious smells. She would often prepare picnic baskets filled with these delicacies, and we would stroll in the nearby park or near the sea, where we would spread a blanket on a bench and enjoy the simple pleasures of homemade food. And that was her way to show me and my sister her love and her ability to find joy in the simplest of things.
It is a bridge between my present reality and the memories of my grandmother, a reminder of the love and joy she brought into my life. It is a testament to the enduring power of human connection, even when separated by distance and time.
