I am Annelies, a portrait artist based in Ghent, Belgium I am a self-taught artist and I use watercolor techniques on wooden panels. I usually work from photographs. Watercolor painting is a slow process and I am very meticulous about creating a true -to-life image, maintaining the fresh and dynamic qualities that make the magic in watercolor art. The layering can take 20+ hours for a small painting and up to 200 hours for a big one. I use high-quality, light fast watercolors and acrylic inks. The panels are covered with a special ground that allows me to build an infinite amount of transparent layers, bringing life and depth to my portraits. The final product is vibrant, durable and uncanny in resemblance.

I love painting all sorts of people. I have a real fascination for faces and put a lot of love and attention in every portrait I paint.

I do not particularly enjoy painting pets. But I do it sometimes,   if I can get a good working photo.

Awards/Grants:

I have never taken part in any competitions.
Only 1 time I painted James Ensor and I was selected for the big exposition in his honor in Brussels (2024)
