This mural was a team-building exercise based on brainstorming words with the Headspace team members. I painted the outlines of the mural, while the Headspace team members mixed and painted the colours. To ensure the successful completion of the mural, a colour mixing workshop was conducted to teach the team members basic colour mixing knowledge. The result was a collaborative mural that not only beautified the space but also fostered teamwork and creativity among the participants.
I am Guiyong, a full-time artist based in Adelaide with a diverse artistic practice spanning murals, paintings, bespoke designs, art installations, and jewelry. Currently, my focus is on creating public art that enriches and beautifies communal spaces, bringing people together and fostering a sense of belonging within the community. Since relocating to Adelaide in 2019, I have collaborated with a wide range of organizations, including councils, universities, libraries, office buildings, commercial shops, and private homes, to design and paint murals that enhance the visual appeal of these spaces.
My passion for creative expression began in high school in 2002 and led me to pursue a Bachelor of Mural Art degree in China in 2011. After graduation, I spent five years working as an artist and art consultant in Shanghai, where I designed artwork for renowned establishments such as Shangri-La and Hilton hotels, as well as commercial and residential buildings. During this period, I became interested in applying art to property development with the goal of creating spaces that are not only visually appealing but also contribute to the health and enjoyment of their occupants.
To further my understanding of this field, I pursued a master’s degree in Property at Adelaide University from 2019 to 2020. This course provided me with valuable insights into the principles of placemaking, which helped me better comprehend the relationships between community, place, and art. I firmly believe that art can bring communities together and enhance the quality of their surroundings. Moreover, I recognize that community members are the best judges of what kind of art and places they need, and that art elements can positively affect their happiness and health. Therefore, I view community, place, and art as mutually reinforcing concepts.
