War of Signs by Jan Herrmann in Düsseldorf
War of Signs
Thesis in the field of Communication Design at the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf, July 2022. The thesis includes a theoretical derivation of the topic and the local conditions, as well as a design experiment. This experiment consists of a series of symbols that can be adapted to various applications using a specific style. Application examples can be seen as renderings, murals, and a poster series at the exhibition of the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf.
The background of the work is the conflict surrounding the use of public space. The war of symbols offers an opportunity to disrupt the order of imposed sign systems, at least temporarily, in a completely commercialized urban area. This aims to initiate a discussion about a more conscious use of our city and its few open spaces.
