MGJLawrence's roots lie deep within the world of expressive, surreal & figurative oil painting: Each painting journey begins on the surface of primed canvas and/or wooden board. With an approach most recognised in the movement of surrealsim, an automatic-subconscious release of expression forms an organic playground of shapes and shadows. I'ts with this base in which Matthew approaches his personal work, in an attempt to surface raw creativity while keeping a flexible unattachement to its path. Inspired by the rich personas of performance artists in the cities late night cabaret scenes, and the avant garde haute couture wearing models that take on playful narrative at DCC Studios, form a strong focus for figurative study in Matthew's work.
