Johannesburg, South AfricaBorn in Daggakraal, Mpumalanga in 1988, Thokozani Madonsela is a multidisciplinary South African artist known for his work in mural art, painting, and printmaking. A graduate of Artist Proof Studio, his practice spans charcoal, mosaic, and mixed media. His work has been featured in prominent exhibitions including the SA Taxi Foundation Art Awards and Absa L’Atelier, along with various public commissions and collaborative projects.
Madonsela’s art explores the emotional power of music and the lived experiences of township life. His figures often hold symbolic objects—such as instruments, flowers, books, or radios—reflecting themes of memory, joy, struggle, and healing. Characters dressed in work gear or shown at rest challenge common social perceptions, honoring the quiet resilience and dignity of everyday people.
Through his deeply empathetic visual language, Madonsela celebrates shared humanity, and the beauty found in ordinary moments.
