“The History of Fishing” mural by Akos Juhasz 2022 H 11m L 318m acrylic latex exterior wall paint

The mural features the history of the local fishing industry. Location: Fisherman’s Park, Urangan QLD, commissioned by Fraser Coast Regional Council Akos undertook a meticulous and intellectually-driven creative process to conceive and craft this mural. His design was inspired by a rich tapestry of narratives and insights shared by the local indigenous tribe, the Butchulla people. A key informant for this mural's compelling storyline was Aunty Lorraine Woolley, a venerable member of the local ancient indigenous fishing family and the original patron behind the mural's creation. The mural highlights the connection between the Butchulla people, the traditional owners of the land and the important role they played in developing modern fishing practices. The artwork demonstrates the use of scoop nets, tow row nets, spears and canoes, Butchulla fishermen to the use of the dinghies introduced by European fishermen when they settled there, right up to the industry we have today. To enrich the mural's narrative, Akos embarked on a journey to collect relevant information from diverse sources within the local fishing industry. He delved into the historical evolution of fishing techniques, boat structures, and vessel types spanning centuries. Additionally, Akos gathered insights into the prized catch of the region, including the mullet fish, which plays a central role in the indigenous fisherman's hands, depicted prominently in the mural. The mural also pays homage to the aquatic biodiversity of the Fraser Coast and Fraser Island, focusing on species traditionally hunted by the local population and those still pursued in the modern era. At its heart, the mural portrays Aunty Lorraine's great-grandfather, seated in his fishing boat—a vessel that now bears the name of Akos's own cherished daughter. The original name of this 19th-century vessel had faded into obscurity, but Aunty Lorraine graciously allowed Akos to bestow it with his at the time 2 years old daughter's name.
