The Future Is Female by Natasha Rose Art in Hamilton

The Future Is Female

A solo project for the Downtown Waterloo's Business Association who hosted an Art Walk series. They paired up local businesses and artists to create small scale outdoor public murals that would inspire and engage the local community. My piece is an expansive and stylistic design that features three powerful, awe-inspiring, and captivating female artists from the 20th century. These were women who challenged the oppressive societal expectations and beliefs of their time and took charge, changing the world through their independence and ascension, and created space for the women and girls of the future. They were our feminist forerunners and it is because of their work and many other women like them that we have the privilege of creative expression in it's fullest capacity. We must acknowledge and thank them through our practices, our art, and our work for blazing a trail on which we may now walk with ease. From left to right is Augusta Savage, Frida Kahlo, and Yayoi Kusama, represented as their younger child forms to represent and connect them to the younger generation of girls in the pursuit of art today. The script above them reads "Futurum Est Feminina", and we notice that each girl engages with the natural world around her with curiosity, respect, and loving care. This is the power of the divine feminine creative energy. I chose to use a stylistic approach referencing the Art Nouveau movement as I felt it perfectly represented this graceful and expressive energy. The project took 2 days and was completed using latex acrylic exterior paint, and spray paint.
