Temple Wall, Fringe Dunedin by Lara Hattingh in Auckland
Temple Wall, Fringe Dunedin
This project, Temple Wall, was conceived to be a mural installation without permanently altering the shared creative space that is the Fringe White Box Gallery. Despite using canvas as the base, I employed the same methods and materials that I use for large murals.
The heart of the project is interaction, interfacing with the public at every step of the creative process. The work developed from planning to final piece mostly during working hours within the White Box Gallery itself. Every phase evoked different responses from passersby, from vacant smoko stares, friendly pop-ins, enthusiastic thumbs up and window tapping to kids staring and pointing — perhaps wondering why I’m allowed to draw on windows and paint on walls.
The process is all that belongs to the artist, the final product is what’s left. It is then out of my hands and belongs to anyone who sees it.
PVA Acrylic paint, spray paint on canvas.
