Swirling Horizon This is an oil painting on a deep-edge cotton canvas. The painting depicts the impression of a countryside meadow, with the tangled structure of vegetation, warm lights, and trees on the distant horizon line. I stylized the three-dimensional landscape into a decorative, textured, two-dimensional painting. The color of the trees in the upper half of the picture is bluer, less saturated, and less contrasting than the foreground, according to the laws of the spatial landscape. The deep, warm reds of the middle are accentuated by the cool blue-green shade of the lower parts. The red-green complementary contrast makes the overall image even more vibrant. I made the painting painting with dynamic, expressive brushwork and some thick impasto layers. The top layers of thick paint were applied with a palette knife. Using the palette knife I formed a swirling, rhythmic texture. These swirling shapes show the structure and tangle of the meadow's plants. The lines formed in the paint lead the viewer's gaze from the foreground to the horizon, where they become denser and follow the shapes of the plants. By combining colors, rhythmic lines, and patterns, I present the impression of a rural field in a stylized form.
