Swamp Gum Tea Tree and Banksia 2021 by Melanie Caple in Melbourne
Swamp Gum Tea Tree and Banksia 2021
‘Swamp Gum, Tea Tree and Coastal Banksia’ 2021, Seaford Library and Community Centre, commissioned by Frankston City Council.
Commissioned by Frankston City Council, although this building was a hub of activity for the local community it was looking very tired and dull. They wanted something transformative but not too overwhelming, and something that would feel welcoming to all. By drawing on the local foliage that lined the nearby Kananook Creek, I featured swamp gum, tea tree and coastal banksias, with soft colours drawn from the Seaford sunsets.
It was such a lovely place to paint, and the community in and around that building were so accomodating.

Meet the Artist
Melbourne, AustraliaWith a Bachelor of Fine Art Painting and a Masters of Arts Management, over the last decade I have developed my arts practice to incorporate finely detailed oil paintings and large-scale exterior murals. Examining our relationship with the botanical world around us with a focus on immortalising a sense of place, I use native flora to activate walls and canvases to draw attention to the fragility and vibrancy of our landscape.
Botanicals, colour and birds are my thing, and I love working with clients to bring walls and elements of landscape to life.
Taking my practice from predominantly painting artworks in the studio to large scale murals has been such an incredible transition. For the past three years whilst painting murals I have been able to work with amazing individuals, school groups, community groups and local councils who are excited to transform and beautify the landscape that they love.
My passion is identifying native plants and birdlife that are endemic to an area, and then using colour and design to really elevate these elements, spurring conversations around sustainability and appreciation for our environment.
I love art deco shapes and colours and these also feature heavily in my work. Every mural or commissioned artwork is a great experience to continue to make amazing art.
