Sugar and Spice

With over a hundred layers, this Halloween wonderland is a portrait I created for a young Tim Burton fanatic. I snapped the original photo in front of a flat, blank wall and then, over approx 30-40hr, I tested hundreds and hundreds of layers. On the hunt, as always, for a balance between mayhem and art theory. Giving every part of the piece enough intrigue for you to linger. Before your eyes dart to another part then somewhere else. I always make sure there's more to discover... The trick to avoid sensory overload is where the art theory comes in. When you're building a world within a world, it still has to make sense. No matter how far I branch out from reality, lighting matters, dimension matters, physics matter. Colour palettes are also key for greater harmony. Long story short: even mayhem has a rhythm...
