Using spraypaint and exterior latex paint in 2021
Toronto-based fine artist Oblsk1 has been practicing abstract painting since 2006, using the medium as a vehicle to explore the visceral connections between colour, emotion, and spatial perception. His work is a continuous investigation into how visual language can evoke psychological responses and suggest layered dimensions of feeling and space. By merging urban influences with the organic, Oblsk creates paintings that are as much about internal experience as they are about visual complexity.
Heavily influenced by street art and the movement of “graffuturism,” Oblsk’s aesthetic reflects a dynamic energy rooted in improvisation, gesture, and material experimentation. Simultaneously, the raw, evolving forms of natural landscapes play a key role in shaping his palette and compositional structure. His process involves building depth through unorthodox layering and mark-making, resulting in works that challenge the viewer’s sense of orientation and perception. Oblsk is especially drawn to the notion of spatial ambiguity—creating pieces that appear to shift and evolve with continued viewing, drawing the observer into a meditative relationship with the work.
Oblsk held his first solo exhibition in 2012, an experience that marked a pivotal point in his artistic journey. Since then, he has exhibited his work in a variety of settings while also mentoring emerging artists in technique and creative development. Through workshops, collaborative projects, and informal teaching, he has fostered a community of practice that emphasizes curiosity, emotional authenticity, and experimentation.
His paintings are deeply rooted in the emotional resonance of colour. Whether through subtle tonal shifts or bold, contrasting hues, Oblsk uses colour as a tool to elicit mood and provoke intuitive responses. Texture plays a similarly important role; by manipulating the surface through scraping, dripping, and layering, he imbues his paintings with a tactile, almost sculptural presence. This approach invites viewers to not just look at the work but to feel their way through it, engaging the subconscious mind in a quiet, personal dialogue.
After leaving OCAD University in 2016, Oblsk formally launched his professional painting career, focusing on both private commission work and large-format murals. His murals, in particular, allow him to expand his visual language into the public realm, transforming architectural spaces into immersive experiences. Whether on canvas or concrete, Oblsk’s art seeks to engage audiences beyond the surface—to create a space for contemplation, connection, and emotional resonance.
Today, Oblsk1 continues to push his practice forward, constantly exploring new methods of expression while remaining committed to the emotive power of abstraction. His work invites us to pause, reflect, and experience the beauty that exists in ambiguity and layered complexity.
