Redivivus by Candy Kuo in Austin

Redivivus

A piece painted for the inaugural mural festival in Austin, Texas. I chose the blue jay as the main subjects because though they are usually territorial birds, I wanted to have two of them sharing a moment of peace, a visual representation of an old Austin meeting the new. In many cultures these birds are interpreted as tricksters but also fighters who persevere no matter how hard the situation, which I think is fitting for both the cheek and strength of our historic downtown. I wanted the colors to be bright to draw you in and the duplicity of the heads to match the quirkiness of not only the brand, but also the quirkiness of Austin's east side. Personally, the birds also represent finding the light in the dark within yourself, and setting it free.
