Picnic Lunch by Glen Downey in Melbourne
Picnic Lunch
Developed and executed in collaboration with the 2022 Year 6 cohort at Mt Scopus Memorial College, Gandel Campus, Burwood.
Two workshop sessions were spent working with the children to develop a concept for a mural around the themes of community and living in concert with our natural, native environment for a mural in an undercover part of their playground
We produced a final mockup based on the sketches that emerged from these sessions where students would discuss and sketch their ideas as I drew a digital version of their thoughts on screen for the group to see and engage with.
With the concept finalised, the interested students assisted me on a series of paint days to go hands-on in the production of the mural.
The cohort was involved practically in the entire process of executing a community minded mural. The students were able to develop a better understanding of symbols and how to communicate with them. They gained the experience of taking ideas through a design process and thinking creatively at a community level and of a practical involvement in the act of mural painting.
Plus it was a lot of fun for everyone!
