The Council issued an EOI for the Pialba QLD Skatepark wall, a notorious hotspot for graffiti and constant spray tagging on the multiple stair car park building. Despite attempts to safeguard the wall through various means, such as fencing, tree planting, and graffiti protection coats, the Council's efforts proved ineffective in curbing daily incidents of spray tagging. In response to this ongoing issue, the Council believed that creating a public mural would serve as a deterrent to graffiti vandalism. The mural was strategically designed to engage with the local youth who frequent the skatepark. It incorporated themes reflecting the interests of these young individuals, featuring dynamic elements like a 3D T-Rex breaking through the wall or surfing on a great white shark offering a unique backdrop for selfies. The mural also showcased different skateboarding movements and skateboard tricks, accompanied by quotes and slang sayings from the skateboarding subculture, creating a relatable connection with the youth. And there are a lot more the mural features from the skating subculture. Furthermore, the mural aimed to provide a subtle cultural impact and art education for the youngsters. It included reinterpretations of iconic artworks in a skateboarding context, such as a "skateboarding Van Gogh" in the recognisable style of the artist, a "skating Mona Lisa" in a mini skirt inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci, and a portrayal of the "skating God" reminiscent of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel Genesis. Among the skateboarding figures depicted in the mural were both famous and unknown talented skateboarders, with some maintaining their anonymity to emphasise the inclusivity of the skating community. The intent was not to highlight a selected few but to encourage and recognise everyone who shares a passion for freedom, skating, street art, and perhaps a touch of teenage rebellion. Remarkably, the Skatepark mural has only been tagged once since its completion, thanks to local skate-gangs that discouraged non-local skate gangs from vandalising the artwork. This success has underscored the importance of respecting the art and fostering a sense of community pride. Additionally, Akos composed and recorded a song that delves into the significance of the artwork, which can be enjoyed alongside a time-lapse video capturing the mural's creation process.
