The painting shows the moment Persephone choices to stay with Hades in the Underworld for half the year. She takes six pomegranate seeds and so has to remain for six months of the year. Hades’s hand is purposefully relaxed, with the middle finger not even resting on the pomegranate, showing he is at ease with letting her choose to stay or go.
