Obsidian Caps Zine by Leila Kutub in Rabat

Obsidian Caps is an illustrated zine that delves into the fascinating world of mushrooms, capturing the beauty and intricacy of various species. Through over 80 traditional hand-drawn illustrations, I explored the unique forms, textures, and characteristics of mushrooms, blending scientific observation with artistic expression. The illustrations were created using traditional techniques and then scanned to preserve the tactile quality of the original drawings. The project was driven by my interest in the natural world, particularly the role of fungi in ecosystems. I used a monochromatic palette to focus on the organic forms of mushrooms, with each illustration reflecting my personal perspective on these often-overlooked organisms. The zine combines both artistic interpretation and scientific exploration, making it a visually engaging and informative piece. Creating Obsidian Caps was a chance for me to experiment with traditional media while deepening my understanding of mycology. It’s a project that reflects my ongoing curiosity about nature and how art can bring attention to the hidden beauty in the world around us.
