Nine lives
This piece features two versions of the same person, one younger and one older, representing growth and aging. The older version appears fearful, looking at a sculpted half-face to the right which is growing stems and roots out of its brain, symbolizing the idea of growth. Meanwhile, the younger self is depicted as happy and unaware of what is happening.
Below the figures, there are four cats, representing reincarnation and the idea that fear transcends belief systems. The artwork uses multiple mediums, including acrylic paint, gold flakes, charcoal, and colored pencils, as well as sculpture, which was hand-molded to use as a reference. The piece started as a painting and was later digitized to enhance the colors and depth.
As an artist, I am fascinated by the concept of growth and aging, and this piece allowed me to explore these themes in a unique and thought-provoking way. The use of different mediums and techniques helped to create a multi-dimensional piece that encourages viewers to contemplate the passage of time and the inevitable changes that come with it.
