My Mom and Her Pet Goldfish by Justin Beamish in Calgary
My Mom and Her Pet Goldfish
This is a painting dedicated to my amazing mother. She always tells my siblings and I the story of how when she was a child, living in Brunei, her family owned a fish tank. My Lolo (Tagalog for grandpa) would bring goldfish and other fish home as pets to put in the tank. My mom figured fish should be treated like any other pet, such as a dog or cat, and she would stick her hand into the tank and pet her goldfish. Sometimes, even pulling the fish out of the water to pet them.
Although this is somewhat of a funny story, this piece is special to me because it reminds me of my mother and the kind heart she has, how she shows love and does her best to care for people of all kinds, including goldfish.

Meet the Artist
Calgary, CanadaHello, my name is Justin. I am a local muralist and visual artist from Edmonton, AB. I am currently studying at Alberta University of the Arts, working towards a Bachelor degree in Fine Arts, with a major in painting. I concentrate a majority of my art and designs around the ideas of hope and unity. Most of my painting style consists of graffiti lettering, cartoon characters and flowers with squiggles & cross-hatched rendering. With colorful palettes and uplifting subject matter my goal is to relate to others and make people smile.
I have been doing murals for 4+ years, and it has become a large (pun intended) part of my practice as an artist. Over these years, I have become confident in the mural-making process: planning and communicating with clients, designing and painting large scale and using the correct paint and tools to create a finished, quality piece. For a season I was employed at a graphics and sign shop, I have gained skills in graphic design, production and packaging, as well as decaling signs and vehicles with vinyl. I have learned the basics of Adobe Illustrator, some photoshop, and adobe stock for graphic design and prepping for printing.
