Mural: Medieval Castle by Anastasiia in Vancouver

Location: Exterior of a Small Shop in Park Year: 2021 Description: This mural was painted on the exterior of a small shop and serves as a true enhancement to the building, designed in the style of a medieval castle with gothic elements. The goal was to evoke a sense of antiquity and grandeur, and I achieved this by carefully painting every stone and crack on the wall, which adds an incredible level of realism. Gargoyles stand proudly along the "castle" walls, their stern and expressive features infusing the scene with an air of mystery and mysticism. I paid special attention to details such as the texture of the stones and ancient bricks, which helped to convey the character and age of the structure. In some areas, ivy has begun to creep up the walls, adding a touch of life and nature to the scene. The plants intertwine with the stone surface, creating a contrast and harmony between the rigid, cold materials and the softness of the greenery. Process: The painting process was both exciting and challenging, requiring great attention to detail. Each stone was painted with care, considering its texture and natural wear, in order to create the effect of an aged wall. I also focused on each crack and rough surface, which gave the mural incredible depth and a sense of reality. Working with light and shadow allowed me to accentuate the stone's texture and the ancient elements, such as the gargoyles and ivy. Outcome: The completed mural became a striking feature on the exterior of the shop, transforming it into a true medieval castle. The meticulous detailing of the stones, the effect of age, and the addition of natural elements like the ivy created an atmosphere where it feels as though the shop is hiding secrets from a bygone era.
