Mural for x+why
x+why is a London-based company that creates flexible and innovative workspaces with excellent environmental credentials.
Their first workspace in the north of England was opened in a brand new building in Salford, called 100 Embankment.
I was commissioned by design agency Mammal to design a mural to enhance the main reception area. The brief asked for a design with a strong narrative, that captured the both the history of the site and area, as well as the sustainable future of Salford.
The site is where Manchester’s Exchange Station once stood, and long before that it was the medieval, agricultural centre of the Salford borough. It then became home to a bustling community of cloth workers before expanding rapidly during the Industrial Revolution. Post-war decline followed before its renewal in the 21st century.
I decided to create a timeline, split into recognisable eras from Medieval to the present and future, scattered with key moments and Salford landmarks, whilst also illustrating everyday people of the time.
The mural was printed onto wallpaper and installed in the main reception space of the building.
I am a freelance illustrator and graphic artist from Manchester, England. I have over 20 years' experience, in which time I have worked for such clients as Carlsberg, Lacoste and Live Nation.
Much of my illustrated work tells a story, either about a place, a person or an organisation. I relish the challenge of storytelling through graphics and always enjoy the research involved in ensuring the authenticity and accuracy of the story that I am portraying.
The work is often very detailed and contains visual references that help draw the viewer in and engage with the work. I also love symmetry.
Please note: All murals shown have been designed digitally and then transferred to vinyl or wallpaper. I do not undertake hand-drawn or painted murals. Please ignore my 'Price per square metre', as I do not charge by area. Unfortunately this website doesn't have a 'Not applicable' setting for this option.
Projects I have worked on include:
Murals for offices, festivals and public spaces;
Vinyl window graphics;
Editorial illustrations for magazines and reports;
Album covers and band merchandise;
Infographics and data visualisation;
Icons and logos;
Assets for animation;
Beer glass design;
Exhibition & event graphics;
Hand-drawn doodling;
Stained glass design;
Presentation design;
Personalised prints & birthday cards;
Temporary tattoos;
Graphics for clothing
I work predominantly with vectors (scalable digital artwork), but also have experience with hand-drawn techniques, and I am a keen doodler.
